Milestones: The newspaper originally was known as The Caddo Gazette & Flag. It changed its name in 1871 to the Daily Shreveport Times. In 1877, it changed to Shreveport Daily Times, then in 1889 to The Shreveport Times. In 1928, The Times, in a historic rift, opposed Gov. Huey Long for tyrannical behavior and misuse of public funds. In 1939, a Times crusade prompted a federal investigation that resulted in former Gov. Richard Leche's conviction for mail fraud. In 1953, The Shreveport Times and The Shreveport Journal entered into a joint operating agreement which ended in 1999. To reflect its regional circulation, the name was changed to The Times in the 1970s.
The Times has been recognized for outstanding coverage as the recipient of numerous awards, most notably as a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1976 for an investigation of the Shreveport Department of Public Safety, and again in 1989 for an in-depth look at Louisiana's education system. In 2006 The Times received the Louisiana Press Association's top prize for "Best Continuing Coverage of Hurricane Katrina or Rita" among all newspapers of every size in the state.
Community interaction: The Times encourages community involvement with political debates, economic summits, community forums, leadership awards, and other community-oriented initiatives. The Times provides community support through Gannett Foundation grants and community partnerships. For more than 30 years The Times "Joy Fund" has provided funds to charitable organizations during the holidays through donations provided by readers with funds exceeding $100,000 annually. In addition, The Times presents the Regional Spelling Bee and supports local events including the Red River Revel, Mudbug Madness, the State Fair of Louisiana, Boutique de Noel, and others. Support is also provided to key organizations such as the Shreveport Symphony, the Opera Guild, Sci-Port, Shreveport Regional Arts Council, Alliance for Education, American Red Cross, Shreveport Green, Community Renewal, Providence House, and the United Way of Northwest Louisiana.
In 2000, North Port, Florida, was an affordable, blue-collar enclave between Sarasota and Fort Myers. Then came growth: seven new people every day for six years, and real estate speculators, and now disaster. With 885 homes in MLS, 200 FSBO's, 400 builder inventory units, 195 foreclosures and 300 more in danger, it's homes for sale, cheap. Or...
